"The question of priorities--how can you edit and write at the same time--seemed to me both queer and predictable; it sounded like 'How can you both teach and create?' 'How can a painter or a sculptor or an actor do her work and guide others?' But to many this edit-write combination was conflicting."
I don't find these items to conflict in and of themselves. They are mutally beneficial. The more you edit, the better your writing will become; the more you write, the better your editing will become. I think the conflict occurs in the area of time management. If you are meant to be writing but spend all your productive time/energy editing, you are wasting a gift. And the opposite is true as well.
*Sigh.* Finding the balance can be quite complicated sometimes.
