The word, once spoken, carries with it something of the life force of the speaker. It assumes an independent existence. The creation, for example, is the result of the word spoken by God. When the Old Testament prophet pronounced weal or woe upon the people, the utterance of the oracle initiated the process leading to its fulfillment. As the arrow when it is released from the bow cannot be recalled, so the spoken word set in motion the event decreed.
