I Finally Thought Of An Appropriate Analogy For This

It's a bunch of dogs peeing on the same fire hydrant. And I'm the fire hydrant. At this point, each dog is realizing his competition and is starting to get into "fight mode" or "defense mode" depending on the individual circumstances. Except there is no actual dog fight. Just a lot of tension and weirdness and dogs going behind other dogs' backs to mark their territory yet again.

And me? I'm just starting to feel very wet and sticky, and maybe I'm starting to smell. And the more they do this, the less I care to sit around and let them continue to pee on me.

I know. It really is gross. It's worse than gross, really. And the thing that perhaps my analogy doesn't accurately portray is that it's not really all about me. Much of this is ultimately directed at someone else; I am being drawn into it in connection to whatever (I don't fully understand) is happening. And I hate it.

So all the dogs are headed to attack one another, and you just happen to be conveniently located for a pit stop?

It's more about marking territory than making a pit stop...but yes. It does seem that way.
